Blood oranges not only have a distinctive taste but provide various health benefits.

Like other citrus fruits, blood oranges are a great source of vitamin C, or ascorbic acid.  Since the human body does not provide vitamin C, it must intake vitamin C from food.  Vitamin  C can repair tissues in your body, ensure healthy gums and help in healing wounds.  The recommended amount of intake of vitamin C each day can be met by eating 2 blood oranges.

Folic acid, also known as vitamin B9, is another reason people will want to eat blood oranges.  Folic acid has been studied to show that it can help fight against heart disease or types of cancer.  Experts also say that it helps lower blood vessels.  Although 2 blood oranges are more than enough to provide your daily intake of vitamin C,  it is not enough to provide enough folic acid.  You’ll have to eat other foods as sources, or you might have to eat several of these oranges.

Calcium is essential for strong bones and teeth.  Since bones are important to the body, your body should intake a good amount of calcium.  Blood oranges include some of this mineral, and therefore provide health benefits deriving from calcium.

Blood oranges also provide vitamin A, which help in keeping tissues in the body healthy.  An example of one of these tissues is the retina.  It also helps maintain skin health and benefits the development of teeth and other tissues.

The red pigment of the blood orange comes from anthocyanins.  Experts claim that anthocyanins help prevent diabetes, cancer, heart disease and infections.  They are also believed to benefit diseases that come from old age, and reduce the amount of LDL cholesterol in the body.
